LG Shine KE970

The LG Shine is a pretty familiar device to our readers, but this time the Shine has gone much darker with a Titanium Black colour scheme.

At present, LG have announced this scheme for the KE970 (GSM) version of the Shine, and not the almost identical KU970 (3G) version. The handset is due to hit major retailers in the UK, Netherlands, France and Austria at the end of July.

Whether or not this dark coloured Shine is actually appealing remains to be seen - it's not always easy to judge how a handset really looks from press photography. It's certainly a striking looking handset, and as the LG Shine is pitched firmly in the fashion phone marker then it should turn a few heads.

Just in case you're not already familiar with the technical specifications on the LG Shine KE970, it comes with a 240 x 320 pixel display in 262,000 colours, a 2 megapixel camera camera with a Schneider-Kreuznach lens, autofocus and a multishot capability. Memory expansion is through a microSD slot, stereo Bluetooth and the LG Shine also has the usual combination of MP3 player, email client, web browser and everything else you'd expect. It's a bit heavier than most similarly sized GSM phones at 119 grams, mostly due to the metal parts in the construction.

Although the original KE970 is a great looking handset, there have been criticisms about signal strength, battery life and that the handset scratches easily. This latter problem is common to a lot of fashion phones - the solution is to take better care of it!

Black Berry 8820

The basic specifications are the same - the BlackBerry 8820 is a quad-band GSM device with GPRS and EDGE data, but no 3G. It has a bright 320x240 pixel display and it comes with integrated GPS for location based services and mapping. The 8820 supports Bluetooth. The software includes the famous BlackBerry push email client (but it can also use standard internet protocols for POP3/SMTP mail), a web browser and a host of applications including a multimedia player. There's no camera on the 8820.

The memory slot on the BlackBerry 8820 supports microSD cards (up to 2GB) and also microSDHC (high capacity) cards which can theoretically hold up to 32GB.

WiFi is the big addition to the 8820 - unusually for a phone it supports 802.11a (5GHz) as well as 802.11b and g (2.4GHz) variants. The 8820's WiFi implementation supports WEP, WPA and WPA2 encryption plus a variety of VPN clients. It is possible to use WiFi with a corporate BlackBerry server, although this depends on the carrier supporting it and probably some reconfiguration will be required.

The BlackBerry 8820 also supports UMA VOIP (Voice Over IP) -so there's the potential for low-cost internet based calls, and also many corporates are rolling out wired VOIP already so this is an interesting migration path for users "in the office".

There's no word on battery life and weight - using WiFi will inevitably drain the battery quite quickly. Expect the 8820 to be a little heavier than the 138gram BlackBerry 8800 too as there are additional components inside.

BlackBerry say that the 8820 should be available in a few weeks time from "selected carriers". We know that AT&T will make it available later in the summer.

All-in-all, the addition of WiFi is a useful enhancement to the 8800 series (and it is RIM's first WiFi BlackBerry device). However, yet again this device doesn't support 3G and it seems a strange omission when the 8820 comes with virtually everything else.

Samsung SGH-G600

Samsung hat sein neues 5-Megapixel-Handy SGH-G600 nun offiziell vorgestellt. Dem Hersteller zufolge ist das Handy für Europa konzipiert und soll noch im 3. Quartal 2007 in Deutschland auf den Markt kommen.

Das SGH-G600 ist mit einem Musik-Player ausgestattet, der verschiedene Klangeinstellungen bietet und im Hintergrund anderer Anwendungen betrieben werden kann. UMTS gibt es beim SGH-G600 nicht. Der interne Speicher von 60 MByte kann per microSD-Karte aufgerüstet werden. Zum Preis wurde bislang noch nichts bekannt.

Nokia 7500 Prism

We expect the Nokia 7500 Prism to be announced in the next week or so - from what we can tell this is an unusual fashion phone with triangular keys. At the moment the only official picture from Nokia comes from China and it doesn't show much detail (see left).

According to the specifications we have been able to determine, the Nokia 7500 Prism is a 2G handset with EDGE and GPRS data, a 240x320 pixel display in 262,000 colours and a MP3 player.

The rumour is that there is perhaps more than one phone to be launched in this range - that would make some sense as Nokia have a tendency to launch fashion phones in threes.

So, other than the fact the we know that the 7500 exists (and we think that it is called the "Prism") then there's very little to go on.. but you can be sure that we'll bring you more news as soon as we have it.

Update: Nokia China now have a page for the 7500 Prism (translated). This says that it's a quad-band GSM device with microSD expandable memory (512MB included in the standard sales package), a 2 megapixel camera, an MP3/AAC/eAAC+/WMA media player, runs Symbian Series 40 and measures 109 x 44 x 14mm and weighs 82 grams.
